Steam Solenoid Valve Basics and Working Principle
What is a steam solenoid valve?
The steam solenoid valve is applicable to the actuating mechanism with the steam as the heating medium and used for automatic temperature control. It can binary automatic control and remote control of steam devices, such as steam heaters, radiators, and dryers, as well as the complete set of boiler steam pipelines, such as temperature self-controllers, steam setters, and steam pre-conditioners. So far, the steam solenoid valve has found wide applications to the self-control system in the field of dyeing, textile, printing, food, medicine, cigarette, cement products, petrochemistry, and metallurgy.
Generally, the steam solenoid valve can be divided into the boiler steam-saturated steam, and steam-superheated steam from the thermal plant.
1. Saturated steam solenoid valve
The saturated steam has a relatively steady temperature and pressure, whose temperature is lower than 250℃ and working pressure lower than 1.6Mpa. Therefore, it usually adopts the steam solenoid valve with a soft seal.
The steam solenoid valve is a pilot-operated type solenoid valve with the secondary opening valve. The structural characteristics is as follows.
The kind of steam solenoid valves is widely applied to textile, printing, petrochemical, plastic, rubber, pharmaceutical, food, building material, machinery, electric, surface processing and scientific research departments as well as self-control systems, such as shower rooms, canteens, and air-conditioners.
2. Superheated steam solenoid valve
The temperature and pressure changes of superheated steam are huge whose highest temperature can reach above 400℃ and its working pressure is as low as 4.0Mpa.
As to the second type of steam, a firm sealing for the steam solenoid valve is usually chosen. For example, the metal hard sealing is adopted to improve the product use temperature and service life.
This kind of steam solenoid valve is applicable to a wide range of mediums, including water, light oil, heavy oil, non-corrosive gas, steam and other fluids. For example, in the power station pump-out pipe drainage system and steamer, the binary automatic regulation and remote control are mainly adopted for the medium in the pipeline.
Steam solenoid valve working principle
Steam solenoid valve can be divided into normally closed solenoid valve and normally open solenoid valve according to the different opening and closing states when power is cut off. The working principle of steam solenoid valve is introduced as below.
1. Normally closed steam solenoid valve working principle
After the coil is energized, the armature first lifts the auxiliary valve plug under the action of electromagnetic force. The fluid on the main valve cup flows through the auxiliary valve, which reduces the pressure on the main valve cup. When the pressure on the main valve cup decreases to a certain value, the armature drives the main valve cup, and uses the differential pressure to open the main valve cup and the medium flows.
After the coil is de-energized, the electromagnetic force disappears and the armature is reset by its own weight. At the same time, depending on the medium pressure, the main and auxiliary valves can be closed tightly.
2. Normally open steam solenoid valve working principle
After the coil is energized, the moving iron core moves down due to the suction force, pressing down the plug of the auxiliary valve. The auxiliary valve closes, and the pressure in the main valve cup rises.When the pressure rises to a certain value, the pressure difference between the top and bottom of the main valve cup is the same. Because of the electromagnetic force, the moving iron core is attracted at the bottom of the main valve cup, tightly pressing the main valve seat and the valve is closed.
When the coil is de-energized, the electromagnetic suction force is zero, the auxiliary valve plug and the iron core are lifted upward by the spring. The auxiliary valve is opened, and the main valve valve cup is pushed up by the pressure difference. The main valve is opened, and the medium is circulated.

Heat resistance
The electromagnetic part and sealing elements make use of electric materials and sealing materials against high temperature, and adopt various heat-insulating measures. -
Abrasion resistance
The proper materials are selected. The valve cup and the orienting sleeve make use of the fluid's lubricating effect to alleviate abrasion and lengthen the service life. -
Condensation resistance
The condensed water of the steam pipeline is an important factor influencing the movement of the steam solenoid valve. This valve, however, is free from the influence of condensed water.
