Why Solenoid Valve Coils Get Hot?
There
are many kinds of solenoid valves, like the solenoid valve for gas
control, for liquid control (such as water, oil, gas). Solenoid valves
are used to control the opening or closing of fluid in the pipelines.
The iron core in solenoid valve coil is attracted when the valve is
energized, which drives the spool to move and thus changes the on-off
state of the solenoid valve.
Why solenoid valve coils get hot?
When the coil of solenoid valve is working (electrified), the iron core is attracted to form a closed magnetic circuit. Namely, when the inductance is in the maximum design state, it’s normal for heating of the solenoid. But if the iron core can’t be attracted smoothly when it’s electrified, the solenoid inductance reduces, the impedance decreases, and the current increases, thus leading to excessive current in the coil and affecting its service life. Therefore, oil pollution, impurities and deformation would hinder the movement of iron core and slow down its actions when power on. The iron core may even be unable to be attracted. As a result, the coil impedance is less than its normal state when it’s energized, thus making the solenoid valve coil get hot or heat.
How to test whether the solenoid valve coil is good or bad?
Measure the resistance of solenoid valve with a multimeter, and the coil’s resistance should be about 1K ohm. If the resistance is infinite, it means that the coil is open circuit. If the resistance is zero, it shows that the coil is shorted circuit, and a new solenoid valve coil shall be replaced.
How to troubleshoot solenoid valve coil heating?
When the solenoid valve is working, it is found that the coil of solenoid valve get hot. The reason for this solenoid valve coil heating may be caused by long-term operation of the solenoid valve. However, if only the temperature is in the proper range of the solenoid valve, the heating will not affect the normal operation of the solenoid valve coil. If the temperature is too high, it will affect the working efficiency of the solenoid valve, or even damage its parts.
Firstly, check whether the temperature of the solenoid valve coil is in a proper range. Refer to the product manual please. Generally there is the working and ambient temperature of solenoid valve in the product manual. If there’s not, please consult to the manufacturer according to product model. General, a slight heating is a normal phenomenon for the solenoid valve. Please don’t worry only if the temperature doesn’t exceed a specific value.
Secondly, wrong selection for two kinds of normally open and normally closed solenoid valves may also cause the solenoid valve heating. If the user selects a normally closed valve while it’s normally open in actual operation, it’s easy to cause overheating of the solenoid valve coil. In case of this reason, a new solenoid valve has to be replaced. So it’s important for user’s model selection.
Thirdly, if the solenoid valve coil is equipped with an energy-saving protection module (the function of energy-saving module is to save energy and cool the solenoid valve coil), the coil would also get hot once the energy-saving protection module gets fault.
Then, the solenoid valve does overload work, namely the actual working conditions of solenoid valve exceeds the designed working environment of solenoid valve. For example, the ambient and medium temperatures are too high, or the working pressure is excessive and supply voltage is too big.
Last but not least, the solenoid valve coil has its own problem in the quality. This fault is the least likely to occur because manufacturers will not affect their brand reputation with low-quality products.Neverthless, they will pay enough attention to the quality of solenoid valves.
